PROTECTING YOUR DOG'S JOIINTS Supplements & treatments to keep your large pooch active
Supplements Although supplementation is necessary, choosing a high-quality supplement can be challenging, Eves says. "It's important to look for a supplement backed by peer-reviewed, published research and manufactured by a reputable company. You should also be aware that supplements are not regulated to the same level as are pharmaceuticals." Wynn recommends giving your pup supplements only from companies that are members of the National Animal Supplement council (www.nasc.cc).
Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements help slow deterioration, and fish oil acts as a mild anti-inflammatory agent, Wynn says. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are found in the product Cosequin®'s from Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. "Cosequin®'s glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate have been shown to support cartilage production and protect existing cartilage by inhibiting enzymes and other factors in the joints that are involved in the breakdown of cartilage," Eves says. "The glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate have also been shown in a cell study to stimulate production of collagen, a touch ropy protein, by not only cartilage cells, but also tendon and ligament cells. This means that Cosequin® can benefit joint health by supporting cartilage and also tendons and ligaments, which help provide stability to the joint." Another brand Seth Cohn, DVM, of Allatoona Animal Hospital in Woodstock, Georgia, recommends is GlycoFlex® by Vetri-Science, which offers formulas for basic, intermediate and advanced joint health.
Cosequin® also offers a double strength product, available for large dogs in both tasty chewable tablets and unflavored capsules. For dogs who weigh more than 50 pounds, initial administration of three tablets or capsules is recommended. "Once a response is seen, administration level can be gradually reduced to a long-term maintenance level," Eves explains.
