PROTECTING YOUR DOG'S JOIINTS Supplements & treatments to keep your large pooch active
Additionally, the new joint health product Dasuquin ® from Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. is a cutting-edge product that combines Cosequin®'s glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate with a potent ingredient known as avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU). "This combination has been shown in cell studies to be even better than glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate together at inhibiting expression of the mediators involved in cartilage destruction," Eves says. Dasuquin® is available from your veterinarian in two formulas: with and without MSM (methyl sulfonylmethane). Some veterinarians recommend MSM as another agent to help support the joints, she says. The initial administration level for Dasuquin® is two chewable tablets per day. Maintenance levels are once daily or every other day.
Other Ways to Protect Your Pup's Joints "Advanced arthritis requires treatment through a number of avenues; there is no silver bullet," Wynn says. "I continue the glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil, but at this point, antioxidants are often helpful in dogs over 10-12 years of age. I also use herbs, though these are individually prescribed depending on the dog's overall condition and medical history." It's also helpful to incorporate massage in your dog's health regimen, as is physical therapy if exercise has not been maintained up to this point, Wynn says. "If the preceding aren't enough, I talk to the owner about acupuncture, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or both."
Exercise is extremely important, too. "Don't let anyone tell you to stop exercising arthritic dogs—exercise kills pains and builds support structures like muscles and tendons that help stabilize the join," Wynn says. Low-impact exercise, like swimming, is best.
By following these recommendations, your active pup can continue to be your most cherished sidekick and do all the things that big dogs do best.
