DOG-FRIENDLY GETAWAYS
Vacation Destination:  Mountains

Resorts in the ranges that welcome your mutt!

SMOKY MOUNTAINS
FIRE MOUNTAIN INN
Located just a few miles outside the village of Highlands in North Carolina is Fire Mountain, a dog-friendly mountaintop hideaway.  All the property's six cabins—located on hundreds of acres—are dog-friendly, and three have decks that are fenced in, making them ideal choices for your pet.

Your canine companion will want for nothing upon arrival, when she'll be greeted with a bowl and treats to enjoy during her stay. Because the grounds are so spacious, your pup will have lots of space to roam and play.  Like other resorts and cabins, Fire Mountain does have rules and guidelines for bringing along pups, which can be viewed on their web site.  A per-day fee of $25 is also included for those who choose to bring along their pets.

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS
BARKWELLS
While they always looked forward to vacationing at a cabin resort on a lake in Minnesota for years with their extended family, Ellen and Michael Winner dreaded leaving their dogs, who weren't welcome on the property, behind.  They often mused that they would one day create a place just as wonderful where dogs were welcomed.

Five years ago, they relocated to the Asheville area, and while searching for their ideal spot, happened up on a nearly seven-acre property that had rolling hills, a beautiful view of the mountains and a one-acre pond, picnic area, campfire, barn and two-bedroom cabin.  It was also fenced in, perfect for animals.  Nailed on the barn, along with old license plates and even older farm tools, was a large round sign that read "Barkwells Antique Gallery, Lexington Avenue., Asheville."  They believed it was a "sign," Ellen says, and Barkwells,
A Pet-Friendly Mountain Retreat, was born.
