JOHN'S JOYS Why John O'Hurley says his greatest teachers are his four-legged companions
What is the most important piece of wisdom your dogs have taught you? There is a chapter in my book entitled, "Every 15 Minutes is a Brand-New Day," which talke about how dogs teach us to live without expectations and without regret. Dogs live in 15-minute increments their entire lives; if you don't believe me, reprimand a dog for something he did 20 minutes ago. . He's already forgiven himself for it. It's a freeing way to live, a hopeful way to live. Dogs live in the present moment all the time—they don't think of the future or the past.
What's next for you? I'm working on a second book entitled Before Your Dog Can Eat Your Homework, First You Have To Do It: Lessons on Manhood. It's Scoshi's letter to my son—the lessons of a little old dog to a little boy who probably will never really know him. He telle him things like "When you bark, mean it. and when you mean it, don't stop until the world understands you meant it." I can't tell you how much I weep every time I finish a chapter. It's Scoshi's legacy.
